At least 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
