Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.
Here's a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The plot starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
