Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Competitors are granted the right to contest specific decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
